This week we will be reading Jess and Layla's Astronomical Assignment. We will be reading this together in class. Students will be responsible for reading for AR as their homework. They should complete any assigned homework that relates to the Jess and Layla book or their AR book.
Accelerated Reader
Students are expected to read in class and at home, books at
their independent level. Computer based tests are taken at
school on books read.
How does it work?
Students take the STAR reading test at the beginning of the year. This tells us the independent reading level for each student. From there, students are assigned a number of points to earn for the marking period. Students are also given a "zone" or level range for selecting books.
Each book is assigned a reading level and a point value. Students read the books from their zone and test at school on the computer.
Students are expected to achieve an average of 85% or better on accuracy. This level of accuracy determines part of their reading comprehension grade.
The STAR test is used to set point goals (different for each person), set the reading level zone, and to determine the "Reads at grade level" item on the report card.
It's important that students choose appropriate leveled books. Classroom teachers and library staff are more than willing to help students find appropriate materials.
Parents can sign up to receive an email every time their child takes an AR test! What a great way to be ready with a "way to go" when they arrive home. Check out the AR link above to get signed up.
Student progress towards each 100% goal is monitored in the classroom.
